A Monument to Chippewa History

Kelly/Shorts Stadium is the definitive home of Central Michigan University (CMU) Football, with a history that dates back to its opening in 1972. The stadium’s original foundation was laid by a generous donation from alumnus R. Perry Shorts, for whom it was initially named. In 1983, it was renamed to honor Kenneth “Bill” Kelly, the esteemed CMU head coach who led the Chippewas from 1951 to 1966. This dual dedication celebrates the essential partnership between academic support and athletic achievement.

Kramer/Deromedi Field: Honoring Coaching Legends

The playing surface at Kelly/Shorts Stadium is officially recognized as Kramer/Deromedi Field. This naming, established in 2022, pays tribute to two iconic figures in CMU and MAC history: Roy Kramer and Herb Deromedi. Their leadership defined eras of success for the Chippewas, and their names now stand as an inspiration to every student-athlete who takes the field.

The Largest On-Campus Venue in the MAC

With a seating capacity of approximately 30,255, Kelly/Shorts Stadium maintains the distinction of being the largest on-campus stadium in the Mid-American Conference. The venue has consistently received recognition for offering one of the best game-day atmospheres in the conference, driven by the passionate student and alumni base of CMU.

Continuous Investment in Excellence

The stadium has seen multiple major renovations, demonstrating CMU’s commitment to providing a first-class facility:

  • 1998 Expansion: A significant project added approximately 10,000 seats, bringing the capacity to over 30,000, and introduced the two-tiered press box and nine luxury suites.
  • Chippewa Champions Center: The most recent major enhancement, this state-of-the-art facility was completed at the north end of the stadium. It provides a modern locker room, expanded sports medicine and rehabilitation areas, and premium hospitality space, directly supporting student-athlete development and transforming the fan experience.
  • Technology Upgrades: Recent years have seen the installation of a high-definition video scoreboard—one of the largest in the MAC—and NFL-quality permanent lighting, meeting all modern broadcasting standards.

Kelly/Shorts Stadium is a symbol of CMU’s proud athletic tradition and its forward-looking investment in the future of the Chippewas.
